 Capoeira (pronounced ka-poo-ey-da) is a unique and captivating Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, music, acrobatics, and culture. 

 Developed centuries ago in Brazil as a form of spiritual and physical resistance, it is more than a fight—it's a cultural dialogue 

Often described as a "game," it is played by two people in the center of a circle called the roda (pronounced ho-da). The players move to the rhythm of live music, engaging in a fluid, non-contact dialogue of kicks, sweeps, and escapes. It is as much about strategy, trickery, and expression as it is about physical skill.

1. Movement (Jogo - The Game): The physical dialogue between two players is graceful, athletic, and strategic. It involves swinging kicks, low sweeps, acrobatic flourishes, and evasive maneuvers. The goal is not to strike your opponent, but to outmaneuver them, create openings, and demonstrate skill, creativity, and malícia (playful cunning).
2. Music (& Song): The heartbeat of Capoeira. The roda is led by a live orchestra of traditional instruments, most importantly the berimbau (a single-string musical bow). The music sets the style and pace of the game. Participants clap and sing call-and-response songs in Portuguese that recount stories of history, resilience, philosophy, and community.
3. Culture & Community: Capoeira is not a sport; it is a culture. It was developed centuries ago by enslaved Africans in Brazil as a means of preserving cultural identity, practicing self-defense under the guise of dance, and fostering spiritual resilience. This history of resistance is central to its philosophy. The community, or asociação, is a family built on mutual respect, tradition, and shared learning.
